I got excited by learning about Slow Internet and spent some time setting up RSS feeder in my Thunderbird. I have 259 RSS subscriptions and 15187 unread feeds.
That's a lot, so I'm trying to take it slow and have a system to help me decide whether or not to delete a subscription. I will probably write a post about my RSS experience and de-Fast-Internet-ing.
But my post is not about that. It's about the wanderlust that struck me again while reading one of the blog posts from the aforementioned RSS feeder. The person was showing off a playlist he had made while travelling by plane. I looked at it and became interested in "Amelia" by Joni Mitchell.
I remembered that I knew her other song "Both sides now", but preffered Judy Collins version, so I was a bit sceptical about "Amelia", but gave it a try.
And I am glad I did. After listening to a couple of the first lines, I got wanderfully sad. I wanted to listen to it without any distractions, so I closed the laptop, laid down on the floor and put the song on my phone.
It was beautiful. Now that I've heard it so many times, it's not as emotionally devouring as it was then, but those moments were so sad and nostalgic for me. I thought about my life, about the journeys I had made and the wanderlust I had not fulfilled. And it made me think that I should spend a lot of time outside of technology and repetitive days.
I reminisced sleeping in a handmade tent (made from branches and moss) in the forest as a scout, hiking in the Highlands of Scotland and setting up the tent and sleeping on the bench in a strange village in Spain 18 hours before a flight 4 cities away.
There was a lot of thinking going on and I want to be as free as I was then and not settle for some lifeless work and life.
Sometimes I look back on my life in moments similar to the one after listening to "Amelia" and remember the poem I read in my youth, written by one of my favourite authors Lang Leav and visualised in comic by ZenPencils.

Sometimes, during winter I remember the song of Maria Peszek artist where she signs modified version of old weird polish lullaby (as most folk tales are).
NOTE - I decided to translate it as raw and word-for-word as I could, with Polish word order, so as not to add or subtract anything from the original lullaby.

For me the original lullaby is about negating the cruellnes of world by altering ending in tale - sweetening death of people as those are revealed to been made of sugar, ginderbread and marzipan, not flesh and bones - so child listening to it could feel asleep soundly.
That's why I really like Maria Peszek's version where she sings certain parts of the lullaby (along with a music video) as if it were about the Second World War and lulling children whilst cites were being bombed. The music video shows a moment when the family had to evacuate their home and venture out into the dark, snowy night, with war planes dangling from the night sky.
There is that rawness, sadness and despite those - lullaby tone of lying to someone who shouldn't experience war time.
I like to imagine that there is a little reference to Maus, where certain nationalities were portrayed as animals: Jews - mice, Poles - pigs, Germans - cats, and I see dog, cat and mice that ate our three castle citizens as representation of invanders. Of course, the poem came to light long before "Maus", so it's more a case of overthinking things, but it's an interesting thought alas.
It's also why I was so enamored by Aleksander Rymkiewicz's poem - "Winter lullaby" written in 1947. He took that old lullaby and injected it into 'record' about Polish (and other countires) situation under Soviet Union influence. His poem is covering the brutal truth about situation of everyday people and above all, there is a hammer, which I would decipher as part of the communism symbol, always there and englessly working.
Along mentioned image of the village in "Winter Lullaby", the author sews in parts of "There Was a King", showing us his interpretation of the old lullaby, which I identify very much with.
Why I mentioned all of that? I just thought I would love to hear Maria Peszek singing 'Winter Lullaby'. That snowy, silent, yet creepily dark and deadly atmosphere of war tragedy really speaks volumes and lingers on, gnawing with every swallow during talk about Second Word War. How much power it could encapsulate as a song sung by her.

Hi! While creating the blog layout, I am thinking about my inspirations. I want it to have a cosmic theme. But not like themed-themed, more like applying simple ASCI art (similar to Advent of Code or harmonieaupetit) for landing page.
The blog is slowly taking on a shape and colour that suits my aesthetic. It's only snippet of aesthetic I identify with. Some of childchood ASCI art we were finding on old Internet websites and sending each other via Gadu-Gadu, but mostly it encapsulates the part of the child in me that was amazed to hear the voice of sarcastic GLADoS singing about science in the end scene of the video game Portal. And it only took me two days (of obsessively sitting on my new blog. I can't see the world outside of it /j)!
I was inspired by A Processing implementation of Game of Life, Yugo Nakamura, The Radar by Ryoji Ikeda (and his other works as well) and ertdfgcvb.
There is cosmos, data, numbers, visuals, art. It's complex and overloaded, but if you look closely and turn off everything else, you can see a story behind the data. It tells a story about a cosmic event, a person, a subgroup, an animal, a civilisation, materials, science.
I don't want to implement that complexity. I want to implement that sense of wonder, of searching and finding little stories within.
At first I wanted to try to recreate Wow! signal from 1977, but as a page of random numbers, with subpages or my projects being ominous signals to be found within that data. The Wow! signal looked good. It's simple, has empty space between the numbers and there are occasional oddities.

But as I approached it and transcribed the Wow! signal into text by hand, I realised a few things.
However, I learned something interesting!
How signal-to-noise radio works and why the Wow! signal is this weird "6EQUJ5"?
The encoding used is a "signal-to-noise ratio" represented as Latin letters. It represents numbers greater than 9 as letters so that they can be printed on the computer in a neat line of the same length, as shown above. Thanks to this, one character width is always needed for the current reading. In terms of memory, letters take up much more space, but in terms of paper they don't.
"6EQUJ5" is a simplified representation of "6-14-26-30-19-5" signal-to-noise ratios. I am not sure what happens after the letter "Z" (36). Maybe it changes to an additional letter like "ZA" or just "Z+" or just to numbers like "37". Maybe the signal in this situation would be so clear that it's just pointless to write bigger numbers in this machine, or the machines couldn't register signals even close to Z, so they didn't bother?

After typying linear plot in my text editor I can say "It's hard to overstate my satisfaction" and "Now these points of data make a beautiful line." (not so beautiful, it's crappy but it's mine).
I've only had those plots for half a day but if someone say something terrible about them I will end everyone visiting this blog and then myself /j.
But enough about that!
My next idea was to create simple map of star, where planets (or constelations) appear and dissapear from sky.

We will see which looks and works best. I want to stay true to simple ASCII symbols, but "(_)" as a planet looks weird.
Maybe some other ideas? I must consult my faithful duck advisor and start tending that plant in my garden of ideas.

Hello everyone. This is my first post for this blog and in my whole life. The blog itself is still under construction and needs a lot of elements, but I think I can at least start writing because steps have to be taken, no matter how small and messy. I've forgotten how to create pages in HTML, so it's time to brush up on my skills and relearn everything! Also it would be a great opportunity to polish my english (I want to make a joke about writting english in polish but maybe another day...).
What will be the main focus of the blog? There will be none. The blog will be like a caleidoscope. I want to write about programming (lots of ideas in my head, so maybe writing about these ideas will inspire me to bring them to life [like this blog - first step - yay!]), cooking, herbalism, poetry, video games, cultures, languages (especially sign languages!), DIY, my thoughts, books and many, many more!
Programming? Boo! I know, I know... There are a lot of programming blogs and I don't want to bore you (and myself) with code (I lost the spark because of my work - maybe it will be reborn in the future), so it's more about showing projects and talking about what was difficult and what was smooth. And I want to write about it from time to time. There is a lot of other interesting things in the world, so why just talk about computers?
Something about me? I prefer to keep anonimity, but I can say I live in Poland, I am deaf activist and work as programmist.
Will I write articles in polish? I am not sure. Somethimes poetry is very difficult to translate into english and there is a lot of polish history context in them (and vice versa for english) so I need to think about it. Also we as country are never extrovertic and happy (/j but not quite) - behavior changes significantly when one switch languages. This brings us to an important dilemma - how to translate well? Is it more important to convey the spirit of the content or to be faithful to the message? We shall see!
